Nissan’s Titan is one of the most prominent light-duty pickup truck in the current market, but despite its immense prominence Nissan has decided to take it off the market. No, it isn’t a bad new, it’s rather good news as they will be replacing it with a next-generation pickup truck. Though the replacement is not scheduled anytime in near future, but it definitely is one the cards and probably will take place in 2014. If you are a Nissan Titan owner and are thinking that it’s too long, then don’t worry, because the wait is totally worth, as you can get an all new heavy-duty pickup truck.

Last year was a tad hard for Nissan Titan. The complete sales for the pickup fell by 44.1 percent in comparison to year 2008 and the another blow came in the form of the failure of a timid deal with Chrysler after the development for more than a year for building next-generation Titan on the platform of Ram 1500 half-ton pickup. But according to the heads in Nissan, the Titan will be getting a turning point.

Speaking on the future expansions of Titan Larry Dominique, the vice president of advanced product planning and strategy of Nissan said “that the company had a pretty decent December from the market share point of view, and we were up by 28 percent in comparison to last year, in October, November and December, on a month-by-month basis. On the basis of market share, we were up by 41% for the aforementioned three months.”

IN order to attain the next-generation Titan, the greatest challenges in front of the company are the tougher fuel economy, stronger security regulations and upper body design. So it’s pretty clear that in order to attain the next-generation heavy duty Nissan Titan, the engineers at Nissan will have to go through some serious hard work. The reason behind this is the aspiration to make the next-generation Titan a light-duty pick-up for market.

The engineers along with Larry Dominique, the vice president of advanced product planning and strategy have done plethora of work to come up with a light weight vehicle, but still there is a long way to go. And even everything gets well, and the Nissan approves their project, the entire procedure of coming the light-weight Titan will take time, and hence till then let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope to get what we always have wanted.

Introduction of 2010 Nissan Armada

The 2010 Nissan Armada priced at MSRP $ 37,210 -$52,190 is an affordable large SUV with plenty of power and rugged capability. This able performer offers true value for money for its size and capabilities. This edition competes with class leading Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition etc.

What’s on offer?

The 2010 Nissan Armada edition offers new trims Titanium and Platinum and have discontinued the LE trim. The new edition has included seat minted airbags for front seats as a standard feature in all trims.

Silhouette

The 2010 Nissan Armada has rugged styling which makes it different from the others in the same class. Its exterior body is styled with a raised roof and arched door frames which makes it very appealing to the buyers. The huge side fender flares enhances the exterior look of this edition.

Overall the 2010 Nissan Armada is designed with an ornate look which is very appealing.

Inside the cabin

The 2010 Nissan Armada features comfortable seating for eight passengers. The rear row seats can also comfortably seat adult passengers. There is plenty of cargo storage space which suits the requirement of families travelling on long trips. This edition offers a maximum cargo capacity of 97 cubic feet which is more than its competitors.

The interior cabin is designed using high quality soft touch materials which have a pleasing design. We would appreciate if the cheap plastic used in the interiors would be replaced.

The controls and the gauges are well placed and can be easily read and used by the operator.

2010 Nissan Armada Powertrain

The 2010 Nissan Armada is powered by 5.7 liter V8 engine that generates 317 horsepower and 385 pounds feet of torque. It is teamed with five speed automatic transmission and offers the option of rear wheel or four wheel drive option.

This burly engine offers an estimated fuel economy of 12 mpg city, 18 mpg highway and 14 mpg combined on both rear wheel drive and four wheel drive which is not very impressive for a large SUV.

The 2010 Nissan Armada when fully equipped can haul 9,100 pounds. This edition offers a comfortable ride on highways but offer jerks on bumpy roads. Newer truck based SUV’s like Toyota Sequoia and Chevrolet Tahoe offer a comparatively smoother on road ride. The off road performance is better in comparison to the on road performance.

Features of 2010 Nissan Armada

The 2010 Nissan Armada is available in three trims SE, Titanium and Platinum. The base SE edition is equipped with 18 inch wheels, an eight way power driver seat, power adjustable pedals, side step rails, rear parking assist, rear climate control, a dual zone automatic climate control, a tilt steering wheel and an eight speaker stereo with an in dash six CD changer and auxiliary audio jack.

The Titanium edition additionally includes keyless entry, a power folding third row seat, an auto leveling rear air suspension, leather upholstery, a back up camera, fog light, tow packages, Bluetooth and an eleven speaker Bose audio system.

The Platinum edition gains dual power folding mirrors, front parking sensor, a power rear lift gate, heated front seats and steering wheel, a sunroof, driver memory functions, a navigation system with real time traffic , a DVD entertainment system and a 9.3 gigabyte hard drive with music storage.

This edition offers options on the SE edition a power folding third row seat, and a driver Package. The DVD entertainment system is also available as an option on the lower trims. The Platinum model offers the option of second row captain’s chair as a replacement for the standard bench.

Safety features

The 2010 Nissan Armada is equipped with safety features like front seat side airbag, full length side curtain airbag, front seat active head restraints, antilock disc brakes, brake assist and stability control.

During the various crash tests that were conducted to check the efficiency of this edition it scored a complete five stars for driver protection and four stars for passenger protection.

Conclusion

The 2010 Nissan Armada is a full size SUV with roomy seating in all three rows, fold flat third row seat, good quality interiors and capable V8 performance.

The main drawbacks of this edition are subpar fuel economy and a truckish ride.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has tested various compact pick up trucks for side impact crashes and rollover crashes and was not very satisfied with the results. The only truck to score ‘good’ scores was 2010 Nissan Frontier which is similar to the 2010 Suzuki Equator. It scored good scores for the roof crush protection while the second place was bagged by Ford Ranger with acceptable scores while Dodge Dakota, Chevrolet Colorado, and Toyota Tacoma scored low scores.

The side impact crash tests also did not have makes takers for full scores. However, Nissan frontier, Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma scored good scores while the Colorado scored the lowest poor rating. The Dodge Dakota that is equipped with optional side airbags failed to prove them self during the crash road test. However it has been decided that the Dodge Dakota will be retested with functional safety airbags at a later date.

It is imperative to score ‘Good’ roof crush test as Pick up trucks have higher chances of rollover than most crossover and SUV’s.

To score the Good rating from IIHS, it is important that the roof of the pick up trucks is twice as strong as the minimum requirement. It has been strongly argued that the minimum requirement laid does not completely safe gaud the occupants during a rollover.

The IIHS offered a Good rating only if the roof withstands four times the vehicle weight before crushing 5 inches.

Nissan faced a rough business phase last year with sales declining to 44.1 % from 2008. Nissan has now plans to update its Titan Light duty truck to take hold of the reclining sales. The plans will take some time to come into reality. It is expected that the updated edition will be available only by 2014.

There are plans to improve the outer body of the truck with a unique frame parts but at the same time bear resemblance in the exterior and interior designs. However there are rumors that Nissan would continue with the existing 5.8 liter V6 engine and once the edition is launched would then work on an option for a more powerful powertrain performance.

The new edition is engineered to offer better fuel economy and will ensure better safety of all occupants inside the vehicle. Nissan is sure that this new edition will be a turning point in the Nissan history as it is designed keeping the demands of the operator in mind.

Nissan also has plans to introduce a heavy duty truck; however they are still waiting for approvals from the head quarters. The new edition would assist in spreading engineering cost that is occurred in more models. This whole procedure would require a lot of time. It is predicted that it would require at least two years for Nissan to finish off with the designing and start with actual production.

Keep tuned and we will keep updating all our readers with the latest inputs about this edition at the earliest.

A 2.5 liter four cylinder engine which produces 152 horsepower and 171 pounds feet of torque or an option of 4.0 liter V6 engine which can generate 261 horsepower and 281 pounds feet of torque. The latter option is available only for Crew cabs and four wheel drive variant. It is teamed with either a six-speed manual transmission or a five-speed automatic, depending on the trim level and configuration.

The 2.5 liter four cylinder engine is available only in 4×2 king cab models and is teamed with standard five speed manual transmission.

When fully equipped the King cab V6 4×2 offers the highest towing capacity of 6,500 pounds.

The four cylinder engine teamed with automatic transmission offers an estimates fuel economy of 17/22/19 mpg while the V6 engine with 4WD and automatic transmission offers a 4WD at 14/19/16.

We noted that the steering was precise which offered a very refined quality.

You consider any vehicle, as matter of fact any mode of transport and read its review. You’ll notice that every single review will have one very hot question, “is it efficient? or does it have good mileage? or How much fuel does it drink? Is it practical? Or what are the savings on fuel?…you can beat around the how much ever you like but, it still asks the same damn thing.

In today’s day and age, a vehicle is not judged by its looks and performance alone, the latest addition is the fuel consumption/economy/efficiency and how-many-plants-sprout-around-you as you drive along. Over the years, all pick up trucks have been built with massive engines, obviously, they need to pull and carry loads nearly twice their weight, but these massive engines were gaping fuel drains. This was not a problem back then, because gas was abundant and the world seemed to be doing well, financially. But today’s world is on the brink of fuel- extinction and is suffering from recession and other debts. Naturally, gas has become the next precious commodity and to add ‘fuel’ to the fire, we are out of money. That means we cannot afford the fuel guzzling monsters that will cut our pockets and empty our bank balances directly. to prevent consumers from running buck wild on alternative modes and services, manufacturers are building more economical trucks, like the Silverado Hybrid and the Ford 150 SFE, but are a tad pricey.

Now what Nissan is attempting is even better. Along with the same efficiency that the Silverado and SFE manage, the Frontier will beat it in the price tag. It costs around $20000 but there is a catch, it is a four cylinder mid-size pick up truck. And to maintain the fuel economy of the truck, Nissan has equipped it with the most basic facilities, such as air-con, manual locking and manual windows and ordinary looking 15 inch wheels. I guess that the price you pay for $20k.

Moving under the hood, we have 152 horses at 5,200 rpm and 171 lbs/ft of torque at 4,400 rpm being pumped out of a 2.5 liter four cylinder engine. This assembly is mated to a five speed manual. The mileage recorded a decent 21 mpg in the city roads and 23mpg on the highway. To sum the ride and handling in one word, bad. Not horrid, just bad. The frontier steered like a drunk , and it really lacked the power to give it an edge. To make things worse, it is supposed to be a mid size pick-up, and it has to manage a hefty load with that puny power. Inevitably, the frontier manages a payload of just 1,002 lbs and a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. that is nearly the amount any SUV can handle.

The insides of the truck are stripped down to its bare necessities, nothing worth noting but, I would mention that the bucket seats installed are extremely comfortable.

To sum up, the frontier is a comfortable and cheap truck. It does not offer any thing special, the term luxury cannot be uttered in a truck like this, it does not do well in its responsibilities of being a truck, power delivery is least exciting and the mileage is not something that you’d want to write home about.
